Registration for the Conference of Applied Jewish Studies (CAJES)
Jewish Studies in Europe's Public Sphere: Research, Education, and Societal Impact
16–18 November 2026 | University of Cologne
The conference is open to the public
This conference asks what Jewish Studies in Europe can, and must, contribute today if Jewish life is to be not only studied but also recognized as a living presence in education and public life. Taking as its point of departure the image of a discipline in transition, one that must redefine its self-understanding, the conference focuses on how knowledge can be conveyed in schools, universities, museums, and public spaces. How can Jewish life, in all its diversity, with its places, literatures, and everyday practices, become visible beyond historical analysis or a focus on antisemitism? And how can this be achieved without such visibility turning into new vulnerability, as has been felt in many places, particularly since October 7? Bringing together regional perspectives from across Europe (Scandinavia, the Iberian Peninsula, Hungary, and Italy) and fostering dialogue between scholarship, educational practice, and young Jewish voices, the conference seeks to identify ways in which Jewish life in Europe can be made visible, conveyed, and strengthened.
The conference is jointly organized by JEWLIF – Jüdisches Leben in Europa e. V., the Martin Buber Institute for Jewish Studies, and the Department of History Education at the Historical Institute of the University of Cologne.
This is the registration for the general public.
The conference language is English.
